Microneedling (also referred to as collagen induction therapy) is an aesthetic procedure that uses tiny needles to create a series of channels in the surfacemicroneedling of the skin to stimulate collagen production by triggering a healing response in the skin. Despite the use of needles, microneedling is actually a minimally invasive procedure. Although there are a number of at home microneedling treatment kits available, Dr. Ellen Jacobson, of SkinMD in Nashville, TN, recommends seeing a dermatologist for professional microneedling in order to obtain the best results.

As we age, collagen production begins to slow down and skin loses elasticity. Microneedling is designed to stimulate collagen production to minimize common skin and age related problems like fine lines and wrinkles and acne scarring. When the needles puncture the surface of the skin with a series of tiny pin pricks, collagen is produced to heal the skin. In addition to improving the skin's texture, microneedling may also make skin care products more effective as they are absorbed more deeply into the skin. PRP, as well as collagen stimulating peels, can be added after microneedling.

How it Works
SkinMD uses the Collagen P.I.N., which is a handheld pen that contains 36 motorized microneedles. A topical anesthetic is applied prior to the procedure to minimize discomfort. A typical treatment course involves four to six sessions over several months for the best results. Although it is commonly used on the face, it can be used on other parts of the body as well.

In addition to fine lines and wrinkles and acne scars, microneedling can also be used for other skin problems including:

  • Brown spots and pigmentation
  • Loose skin
  • Stretch marks
  • Large pores
  • Skin tone/texture
  • Hair restoration

If you have acne, rosacea, eczema or other skin irritations or problems, check with a dermatologist to see if microneedling is right for you.
