Neurotoxin Injections

  • Neurotoxins are most commonly used in the upper third of the face, but it may be used sparingly around the mouth and on the neck.
  • Treatments are individualized for each patient’s desired results.
  • Neurotoxins are administered by several small injections with minimal discomfort.
  • Effects may be seen within 5-7 days for Botox and 3-4 days for Dysport. Full effects are seen at two weeks after injections. Touch ups will be performed on an as-needed basis between week 2 and 3 after your initial treatment to ensure that you are pleased with your results.

  • Recommended for patients who are not adequately managed with oral and topical agents.
  • Duration of results varies, but 3-12 months per treatment is typical.
  • Works by blocking the chemical signals from the nerves that stimulate the sweat gland.
  • The medication is administered by a series of tiny injections into the axilla (armpit).
  • Effects are usually seen during the week following treatment.
  • Touch ups may be necessary at 3 weeks if any areas still sweat.
  • Insurance considerations: Insurance may cover the cost of the procedure. It is the patient’s responsibility to file the claim to insurance after the procedure. There is no guaranteed that the procedure will be covered.
  • The cost is based on the amount of medication used – typically $1,000 to $1,500 per treatment.

  • Bruising at the injection sites may be minimized by avoiding aspirin-containing compounds, ibuprofen and vitamin E.
  • Eyelid drooping occurs in about 1% of all patients treated with Botox. This is avoided by not treating too close to the mid-brow area, especially in a person who raises their eyebrows to keep their upper eyelids open. Eye drops may be used to correct the droop during the 3 weeks it takes to self-correct.
  • When treating around the mouth for lip lines or ‘pencil thin’ lips, there may be temporary lip weakness for 1-3 weeks.

Before & After

We have all heard of the tragic misuse of botulinum toxin. In those cases the injector was inexperienced and did not use the brand-name ‘Botox Cosmetic’. Allergan, the manufacturer of Botox, has a controlled, standardized production process to ensure patient safety.
